Used Book Consignment Policy

In good weather, Water Street Bookstore sells used books in front of our store. Below are our standards and practices if you wish to consign with us.

Our intake standards are as follows:

  • All books must be in very good condition. Books that are stained or mildewed, highlighted or written in, musty or smoke-smelling, or have damaged pages, covers, or spines will not be accepted.

  • Recent quality trade paperbacks are best. Books from the last few years are what our patrons typically purchase.

  • Hardcovers in very good condition are accepted in the following cases: recent cookbooks, children’s books, coffee table books, and if it is not yet out in paperback.

  • Books are accepted May- August. We only accept books during our sidewalk sale season as we do not have storage space year-round.

  • Books should be brought in for review on weekdays. Our used book coordinator will evaluate the books and notify you if they are accepted. An intake slip will be provided so we can track your books.

  • 25- 50 books are accepted at any one time when dropping off in store. For larger collections, please contact the store owner, Dan Chartrand, at (603) 583-1551.

We do not accept: manuals, travel guides, reference books or other time-sensitive subjects, textbooks, encyclopedias, advanced copies, audio books, magazines or ex-library books.

Our consignment practices are as follows:

  • Book sales are split 50/50 between the seller and Water Street Bookstore.

  • Books are priced by us; a typical book will be priced at 4.98. It may be priced differently if it is a children’s book or for another specific audience or purpose.

  • Checks are mailed out annually in January. If your books sell with us, we will total up and mail out checks to you early the following year.

  • Books that do not sell after two months of display will be donated.
